Melbourne, Australia: The Australian Hydrogen Council (AHC) today congratulates the Albanese Government on its election win. This is welcome news for the hydrogen and derivatives industries in Australia, and affirms supportive policies that the Australian Labor Party brought to the Federal election including its Future Made in Australia agenda.
CEO of the Australian Hydrogen Council Dr Fiona Simon said:
“Australians have made a clear choice over the weekend to return the Australian Labor Party to Government. This choice affirms key policies such as the Future Made in Australia agenda that recognises the importance of hydrogen and its role in the production of derivatives such as green ammonia and methanol, green iron and alumina.
“Hydrogen used directly for industry and transport, and products made with hydrogen will be key to decarbonising global heavy transport such as shipping and aviation, agriculture including fertilisers, and steelmaking – that all have a significant impact on the world’s carbon emissions and must be decarbonised to achieve net zero targets.
“Australian hydrogen and derivatives projects are still forging ahead, and policy certainty has been top of mind for investors and our trading partners. This election result paves the way for a new term that builds on the strong foundations set by the Albanese Government in its last term including the launch of the National Hydrogen Strategy, and legislation of hydrogen production tax incentives.
“Our industry is pre-commercial, and in the absence of carbon pricing, government support is essential to reduce the commercial gap for hydrogen, grow national and regional capabilities and boost our energy system resilience and fuel security.
“We look forward to working closely with the Albanese government to progress its second term agenda, and continuing to be a trusted industry voice to support the design of key policies that will unlock the economic and regional benefits of an Australian hydrogen industry and derivatives. This includes the progression of Hydrogen Headstart 2.0 and Future Made in Australia initiatives, and importantly requires stackable industrial demand side policy to achieve decarbonisation targets.”
