About Australian Industrial Decarbonisation Council

The Australian Industrial Decarbonisation Council (AIDC) provides a collective voice for companies decarbonising Australia’s industrial assets and investing in future industrial growth. It also represents the businesses providing the industrial and technical capabilities needed to support that investment.

Our approach starts with the asset, whether a facility, project, precinct, corridor or supply chain, and examines the conditions shaping the owner’s investment decision. We bring the practical realities of how companies and their boards assess decarbonisation investment more directly into policy development, helping governments design settings that support credible capital expenditure.

In July 2026, the Australian Hydrogen Council became the AIDC. AIDC builds on AHC’s expertise in hydrogen and derivatives, applying that capability within a broader focus on the conditions required for industrial decarbonisation investment.

Hydrogen remains an important pathway where it offers a credible solution for industrial feedstocks and processes, sustainable fuels, energy storage and other hard-to-electrify applications.

Questions about AIDC

AIDC is an industry association that fills the space between broad decarbonisation ambition and actual industrial investment decisions. Its role is to translate what is happening inside facilities, supply chains and regions into policy settings that support credible industrial investment.

Australia’s hydrogen opportunity was initially seen as broad and global. As the market developed, attention increasingly turned to the domestic industrial uses needed to support local decarbonisation, build capability and strengthen future export pathways.

That took the organisation’s work into heavy industry, clean industrial products, fuels, feedstocks and other hard-to-electrify uses. Working on those projects revealed the larger investment challenge: facilities, sectors and regions need a wider set of conditions in place before major decarbonisation investments can proceed.

AIDC allows us to address that task more clearly. For members, the change provides continuity of purpose and a stronger platform for the next phase of work.

AIDC advocates for policy settings that support investment in hard-to-abate industrial emissions reduction while maintaining industrial capability and competitiveness.

Its work spans the policy, infrastructure and market settings that shape industrial investment, including work on the Safeguard Mechanism and Future Made in Australia.

AIDC’s focus on Australian industrial decarbonisation includes both domestic capability and future export opportunities. Export credibility is stronger when Australia can demonstrate capability at home, including through infrastructure, standards, certification, skills, customers and bankable projects.

AIDC supports the policy and market settings that help domestic industrial projects proceed, while also supporting export pathways for clean industrial products, fuels, feedstocks, commodities, services and partnerships.

AIDC membership is for organisations making or enabling credible investment in reducing emissions from Australian industrial activity. More information about membership and how to join is available on the Join AIDC page.

Yes. AIDC retains AHC’s expertise and relationships across hydrogen, derivatives and low-emissions fuels. Our work now begins with the industrial asset or investment problem and considers hydrogen where it is a credible part of the solution, including in ammonia, fertilisers, explosives, refining, sustainable fuels, green metals and other hard-to-electrify applications. We will continue to work on relevant policy, infrastructure, certification, market and investment conditions.

As the Australian Hydrogen Council, we worked with CSIRO to develop a comprehensive set of hydrogen FAQs. These remain available through CSIRO’s HyFAQ website.
